Post-Chicago Pipe Show

After arriving home late last night, I had the same sad moment every pipe smoker, collector, and maker has after leaving the show – it’s another 359 days (or so, I go up early) until I return. The show was a fantastic success as usual. It has become one of the most pleasurable experiences of my life. The sights, beauty, and wonderful fragrances of the show and smoking tent are something to behold and must be experienced by every piper at least once.
I’d say the best part of the whole event is the camaraderie. The new friendships built and old friends we see year after year. I have gained so many fantastic relationships from the show; whether it be collectors, other pipe makers or new pipe smokers engaging in the show for the first time. There are so many wonderful people surrounding the pipe community, it makes me happy to be a part of it all!

I received a very positive response from so many about my work, which is quite encouraging. As always, I sought out the more experienced pipe makers to give me advice on how to better my work. The willingness of the pros to help is amazing and quite humbling. I remember this and try to offer any information to new pipe makers that may assist them on their journey.

I did want to share the 2 most popular pipes on my table, apart from the Gear-Punks of course. I was quite pleased with both pieces and they caught the eye of one collector who bought both. I hope he enjoys smoking them as much as I did making them!

73-13 ‘Gear-Punk 1.4′

The next in the Gear-Punk line, this pipe sports a bevel-gear cut with the teeth blasted, appearing as though they were a casting. The pipe’s beautiful and unrestrained flame grain radiates from center, set against finished and polished brass scroll work – contrasting the two worlds of natural and man-made. The stem is constructed of high quality German ebonite, brass, and is jeweled by an amber acrylic bead. All metal work is hand-cut brass, down to the custom turned rivets.

This blasted poker is deep and mysterious like the best poker players. The band, made from aged Colorado mule deer antler, has muted gray graining providing a nice contrast with the dark blast and stem. The stem is a custom colored cumberland with rich browns and deep grays set against the black ‘streaks’.

Another recent commission, this ‘Anse’ is a larger, brown contrast blasted brother of the most recent golden blast version. Not quite as featherweight as the golden blast, this one is still easy on the jaw coming in just under an ounce (27g).

Had an interview with Steve Ross of Pipes & Tobacco Magazine in my workshop a few days ago. I am honored and thrilled to be considered for an article in the famed pipe periodical. Another in the line from the popular series, this one is a golden blast with a pencil shank (.375″). The shank is bolstered with a thin brass band and the stem is a brown cumberland. This slim and light pipe will be great for that break-time smoke!

Adderley, my most recent commission, could be a horn or zulu but I find it most closely resembles a slender bent dublin. Its brown blast and nickel silver band set off the gentle curves of stummel and stem.
